Leak detection exists so that walls get opened once, in the right place, instead of three times in the wrong ones. The scenarios that call for it are a rising water bill with nothing visible, a damp patch with no obvious source above it, a musty smell in a room where nothing has ever leaked, and a stain that keeps returning after being painted over twice.
The methods stack. A meter test with all fixtures closed establishes whether there is a supply side leak at all, which is a five minute check that saves a lot of speculation. Thermal imaging finds temperature anomalies across walls, floors and ceilings, which narrows the search area quickly. Acoustic equipment listens for the specific frequency of pressurised water escaping a line, which is how a slab or buried leak gets located within a workable margin. Pressure testing isolates sections of the system to identify which run is failing. Moisture meters confirm, at every step, that what looks wet actually is.
Sequence matters more than equipment. The first question is always whether the water is supply side, drain side, or intrusion from outside, because those three are found in completely different ways. A drain leak only shows when a fixture is used. A supply leak runs constantly. Water intrusion tracks the weather. Establishing which one you have before deploying anything narrows the job enormously.
The output is a location and a recommendation, not a hole. Where the leak is a plumbing failure, a licensed plumber makes the repair. Where it is intrusion through a building envelope, that is a different trade again. Where it is condensation, the fix is mechanical rather than plumbing, and that is worth knowing before anyone cuts anything.
